Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week started Sunday, September 30th and runs through Saturday, October 6th. Come one, come all to celebrate our freedom to read. It is disgusting to contemplate the ongoing problem of censorship alive and well in our country.

Books challenged or banned in 2010-2011 include: Running With Scissors, Speak, My Mom's Having a Baby, Betrayed, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, The Awakening, The Hunger Games, Water for Elephants, Snow Falling on Cedars, Brave New World, The Koran, Get Well Soon, Song of Solomon, The Catcher in the Rye, Twenty Boy Summer, Slaughterhouse-Five to name just some.

This is not tolerable. As a writer I am profoundly saddened. But this struggle will always exist as long as fear and hatred remain mainstays of the human soul. Practice love this week. Love of books and love of our fellow humans. Love of our world.
