May Madness!

What a crazy month May has been. The twins finished up their freshman year at college and they are both home for the summer. I've been to Florida, swam with dolphins in the Bahamas, and as you are reading this, I'm attending Book Expo America in NYC. Stud is with me, making it the first time we have ever traveled together for separate business trips.

But let's go back to the Bahamas. The reason I missed my last post was because I actually thought I'd have everything together and not be running around like a headless chicken right up until we left for the airport. Uh-huh, riiiiiight. On a more successful note, for those of you who were following the results of eating Paleo to lose weight for this trip - I did all right. Lost almost 15 lbs in 2 months. I could have done better, but I fell off the exercise wagon pretty early. Still, it was good enough, and I will not only continue to eat modified Paleo, I will get back on that damn exercise wagon.

The cruise itself was a lot of fun. I got to meet a bunch of Stud's coworkers and their spouses, and they are a fun group! The company picked up the tab for everything, and I mean everything! Without that, we couldn't have done the dolphin encounter. Here's a pic from that, as well as proof that I do need a life jacket to be buoyant in water.

Later that night, Stud and I got to meet up with two very special ladies from Nassau who come all the way to OH for Romanticon. It was so cool to be able to come to them! Tina and Sharel, I hope you don't mind if I share this photo here, too.

Here's something you don't see every day, unless you live on an island!

And last but not least, I couldn't resist snapping this pic when she walked by. This one is for all of my friends in Texas.
We were supposed to have a 2nd day on land on Coco Cay, but high winds prevented the launches from bringing us ashore. We had a cabana for the day and a kayak/snorkel adventure that got canceled along with it, so we were pretty bummed. Oh well. My heavy sandals got blown two lounge chairs down when I tried to catch some rays upon deck later that day, so it's pretty safe to say they made the right decision.

There are still a few days left in May, and the 31st is the best one of all. Happy Anniversary, Stud! 22 years flies when you're having fun!

New Release!

Fresh off the digital presses: Dragons and Dirigibles, book 7 in the Gaslight Chronicles.

Blurb:  When airship engineer Melody McKay's dirigible explodes and plunges her into the yard of a gothic manor, she suspects foul play. With her ankle injured--an indignity far too feminine for her taste--she resolves to crack the mystery while in the care of Victor Arrington, the stuffy-yet-disarming Earl of Blackwell.

Ex-Royal Navy Captain Victor runs a tight house and is on a mission to protect his niece and foil a ring of smugglers using fire-breathing metal dragons. He has no time for romantic attachments. Particularly not with women who fall from the sky wearing trousers and pilot's goggles.

As he and Melody navigate a treachery so deep it threatens the lives of everyone in Black Heath, the earl becomes unexpectedly attached to his fiery houseguest, and Melody discovers a softness in her heart for him. But when the smugglers strike, there's more at risk than just their future together.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Did he really want her? Care about her? She itched to touch him but was afraid to try.

“I am sorry for the things I’ve said about you. You’re not what I expected in a lady, but you certainly are one of the finest I’ve met.”

“Thank you. For a sailor posing as a country landowner, you do all right yourself.” Frankly, right now, she was tired of being a lady. Perhaps it was time to simply take what she wanted. “Anything else?”

“Only that we ought to both go upstairs to bed—our separate beds.” He grimaced. “We may not be destined for a real marriage—I know I can’t be what you want and you would never be happy here—but that doesn’t mean I don’t admire you…don’t want…”

“Want what?” She swallowed hard. “Victor, you might be surprised—”

“You’re a beautiful woman, clever and brave and apparently magickal as well. I’m only a very flawed human, but you’ve gotten under my skin. Despite my best intentions, I want you, and that rosy flush on your cheeks tells me I’m not alone in desire. I’ve been trying to be a gentleman, but I can’t promise to continue if we stay here much longer. I should leave.”

He wanted her. Heat tingled from Melody’s scalp, all the way down to the tips of her toes, concentrating low in her belly. She looked at him, gazing into his eyes, and felt his passion almost like a physical touch, gliding along her skin. Her breath quickened and her heartbeat raced.

“Don’t go.” She held out her hands. “I’m tired of being a gentleman too.”

His laugh was a soft deep rumble in his chest. He engulfed both of her hands in his larger ones and slowly pulled her into his lap. “Are you sure?”

“Quit talking and kiss me.” She slipped a hand behind his neck and lifted her lips to his.

My First NY Release! HER PERFECT MATE (X-OPS Book One) is Online and in Bookstores Everywhere!

It's my first Soucebooks release and I'm so excited I can barely sit still!  It's a military/paranormal/romantic-suspense/thriller called HER PERFECT MATE and it's the first book in my X-OPS Series!

The series revolves around the Department of Covert Operations, a secret organization within the Department of Homeland Security. They get impossible missions done by pairing the very best soldiers, law enforcement officers, and spies together with shifters—humans that possess special animal attributes in their DNA.

The heroine is a feline shifter named Ivy Halliwell. At the start of the book, the DCO is pairing her up with yet another military guy. To say she isn't thrilled is putting it mildly. But she has a good reason for that. Her previous partners hated her because she was different, and she thinks this new partner will feel the same. But Captain Landon Donovan is Special Forces, so he's used to taking impossible situations in stride. He's also hot, hunky, and smells delicious.

HER PERFECT MATE is a paranormal shifter story that blends romance, action, suspense, and military elements into one exciting package that will keep you up all night reading—I promise!

Blurb:

He's a High-Octane Special Ops Pro

When Special Forces Captain Landon Donovan is chosen for an assignment with the Department of Covert Operations, he's stunned to find his new partner is a beautiful woman who looks like she couldn't hurt a fly, never mind take down a terrorist.

She's No Kitten

Ivy Halliwell isn't your average covert op. She's a feline shifter, and more dangerous than she looks. Her feline DNA means she can literally bring out the claws when things get dicey. She's worked with a string of hotheaded military guys who've underestimated her special skills in the past. But when she's partnered with special agent Donovan, a man sexy enough to make any girl purr, things begin to heat up. He doesn't think she's a freak-and he's smokin' hot. Soon they're facing a threat even greater than anyone imagines...and an animal magnetism impossible to ignore.

Excerpt:

Landon expected Todd and Kendra to take him to another conference room, so he was surprised when they led him into what looked like a workout room. Mats covered the floor and a heavy bag hung from a hook in one corner. Weights and workout equipment filled a good portion of the room. A woman was seated cross-legged in the center of it, her eyes closed, her hands loosely resting on her knees. At their entrance, she gracefully uncurled herself from the floor and got to her feet.

She was wearing a pair of black workout pants like his ex-girlfriend used to wear when she went to yoga class, and a form-fitting tank top. He couldn’t help but notice her curvy, athletic body, expressive dark eyes, and full lips. With little makeup and her long, dark hair pulled up in a ponytail, she looked like the girl next door. Only more exotic than any girl he’d ever lived next door to, that was for sure.

He didn’t care how tired and irritated he was, this was a woman he definitely wouldn’t mind stopping to appreciate. Hopefully, one of his new training officers would introduce them before she left to give them the room.

“Landon, meet Ivy Halliwell, your new partner,” Kendra said. “Ivy, Landon Donovan, Captain, Special Forces.”

They were going to have to pick his jaw up off the floor because Landon was damn sure that’s where it was after hearing that announcement. No way this walking wet dream was his partner. She looked like she couldn’t hurt a fly, much less do any kind of covert ops. They had to be messing with him.

Argh! Thank Goodness it's Almost Mother's Day!

Yesterday, I wrote a whole lovely post and hit 'publish'. Today, it's not here. This has been my whole week!

My Indie was supposed to come out on Monday. Nada. Tuesday? Nope. By Wednesday both my agent and I were pulling out our hair. Finally the book appeared on Kindle. I didn't notice it at first, but there's a big ol' typo in the title. The Cupcale Coven? Excuse me? Who wants a cup of cale? Oh. My. God!!!

Could this week get any worse? (NO! Don't answer that! I'm trying to think positive. I'm trying to remember the law of attraction. Like attracts like. Only good thoughts will attract good things.

So, I'm trying to ignore the big pile of blonde strands around my office chair and think positive. But how does a person do that when nothing is going right?

Mother's Day is tomorrow. Think about that. I always have a wonderful Mother's Day.
Mr. Amazing and his brother are cooking brunch.
I've lost a bunch of weight and can afford a few extra calories tomorrow.
I get to visit with one of my favorite people in the world--my daughter.

Sigh.

Okay. I'm feeling a little bit better. Now I'll announce my new release--
Reigniting the excitement of Sunday night...

It's here! Release day! After putting up with covers I didn't want and edits I couldn't stomach--
No...No. That's not positive. Try again.

It's here! My first Indie book is here!
Just now as I was trying to insert the cover, my computer froze. O.M.F.G!
Sometimes the only things that help me get through times like this are a fan letter, or a good review, or SOME reminder of why I'm doing this.

I'll post the first 10 reviews from Amazon that will save my sanity and my house. (My husband just asked if Godzilla was in my office.)

“…how can you go wrong with witches & cupcakes???? I am already hooked & this is just the first book. Can't wait for the next one.”

Ashlyn Chase has done it again! I feel bad that I have set up such high expectations for this author but with every book she releases she not only meets my elevated expectations she exceeds them… She transports me to a place where I suspend my disbelief and just let go… I loved the full cast of characters I met in the first book of this new series. I cannot wait to read more about them all.

The Princess Geek and the RWA Romance App

 © | Dreamstime.com

Some writers do...

Some writers don't...

Love technology, that is.

I fit the former. I've been a princess geek (a geek who believes in fairytales is how I call it) since I first learned to write code when I worked for a computer magazine. I interviewed everyone from game designers to hackers and learned along the way. I cut my teeth writing a computer game for a video company and socialized with other writers on bulletin boards back in the day.

Now comes the latest techno trend and it's all about romance.

The Romance App from RWA (Romance Writers of America). Here's the blurb from the website:

"Novel Engagement™ is a book discovery app that is focused exclusively on romance authors and romance novels. The app has been developed to work on iOS and Android devices (smartphones/tablets) and is on track to launch mid-May 2014."

And here's the best part. It's free! "...give romance readers a free one-stop resource for finding the books they want to read."

I can hardly wait to see how it works on my smartphone. Cooler yet, I signed up to put my books on the app. I'm in the process of adding each book, the blurb, video, excerpt. I feel like a kid with a new toy.

So if you're a Princess Geek like me, check it out! Sign up and then subscribe to the authors you love. If you like erotic romance and adventure and historical romance, I hope you'll check out my books on "Novel Engagement™. I'll have more info next time after the app launches.

Now if only this RWA app could find us a prince...

Best,
Jina

A Big, Steaming Bowl of WHAT?

I love to cook. Basic, exotic, you name it and I’ve probably made it - as long as it doesn’t contain Brussels Sprouts. Sorry, but there is no way to make those suckers taste good.

If you look in my kitchen, you will find everything from ketchup to coconut milk, goat cheese to kaffir leaves, and just about anything and everything in between. Most of those are staples. Many different cultures have been served up at my table, and the most successful of those attempts become a staple of our diet as well.

Why am I telling you this?

Well, Stud and I were trying to find a decent place to meet friends for dinner, and I came across, hands down, the most pretentious menu I have ever seen. By the time I had read a few of the menu items to Stud, I was laughing my ass off. Here’s the very short conversation that ensued:

Me: “I don’t care how close to them this place is. You do realize there’s no way in hell I’m eating there.”
Stud: “I’ve never loved you more.”

Here are bits of that menu. I challenge anyone reading this to give me a plain english translation.

Let’s start with an appetizer description:

Warthog Wheat with Sprouted Spelt
Sourdough with Nugget Hops and Cranberries

Umm, whaaaaat? I know what everything listed is except for Warthog Wheat. My best guess for the ingredients together is...a bowl of oatmeal?

Sudbury Pullet Egg
Mousseron Mushrooms, French White Asparagus Soubise,
Mushroom Marmalade, Wild Mustard Leaf, Corn Flour Crouton

Good Lord, even the crouton can’t be just a crouton. Are you ready for an entree?

Handmade Burrata
Australian Wagyu Bresaola, Blood Orange,
Brown Butter Brown Bread, 50-year Sherry Vinegar,
Petit Greens

I don’t even know where to start. Yes, I know some of them, but I’m scratching my head at the main...meat?

Roasted Beef Bavette
Spelt Berries, Crème Fraiche, Roasted Treviso,
Carlisle Honey, Pickled Watermelon Rind, Red Wine Jus

Ah, there’s the beef. Well, the word is there, anyway. Ready for cheeses and a dessert?

Flory’s Truckle
Raw Cow’s Milk Cheese, Milton Creamery, Iowa
Candied Nuts, Parsnip Mostarda, Carlisle Wildflower Honey
Toasted Pain d’Epices

Muscat Grape Semifreddo
Toasted Almond Biscotti, Candied Oro Blanco,
50-Year Sherry Vinegar Labne, Sherry Honey

Um, I think these are a cheese plate and a dessert.

Pretentious much? I’m not saying I don’t appreciate a fancy meal at a fancy restaurant. I just want to be able to read the menu to know what I’m ordering, especially if the prices are every bit as pretentious.

What do you think? Would you eat there?
