Vine 2

Vine is my new toy.

No, not that kind of toy.

My social media darling. Whoever thought six seconds could be so much fun? Of course, it takes me a lot longer than six seconds to put together a Vine video, but that's half the fun, isn't it?

I guess you could call it "Vine foreplay."

Here's my latest Vine post featuring NAKED SUSHI:
Amateur spy PEPPER O’MALLEY gets more than she bargained for when she discovers her sleazy boss is hiding corporate secrets.
She gets fired.
Was it her fault she got caught in the copy room with her pants down with a hunky thief?
The only way Pepper can get her job back is to become a naked sushi model and spy on her ex-boss.
She’s thrown into a world of corporate espionage she never imagined…

NAKED SUSHI is available for pre-order on Amazon!

I've just seen the COVER for NAKED SUSHI and it is so hot!! More info soon...

"Move over vamp heroes. The zombies are coming to town and they're DEAD SEXY." ~ Cynthia Eden, USA Today Bestselling Author

"Loved this book. Paige Tyler has a real flair for combining hot romance with the paranormal." ~ Desiree Holt, Bestselling Author

Author's Note: NO PEOPLE WERE EATEN IN THE MAKING OF THIS BOOK

DEAD SEXY

Can her love save him from a curse worse than death?

Romance author Simone Kent thinks she might just have found the most perfect guy in all of New York City - in bed and out.

But Drake Parrish is about as far from perfect as any man can get. Eight years ago, he was cursed by an evil Voodoo priestess to live part of his life as a zombie. Since then, he has lived like a recluse on New York’s Upper East Side, afraid to go out for fear he’ll suddenly turn into one of the walking dead.

The sex is the hottest either of them has ever experienced and Simone discovers just how naughty she can be with Drake, while he finds himself feeling things for Simone he hasn’t felt in a very long time. When the Voodoo priestess learns of their relationship, however, she comes after him again. She's determined he won't have a future with Simone, even if that means killing  both him and the woman he loves.

Excerpt:

As she led him up the steps to the second floor, Drake found himself wondering if she would ask him in. And wondering what he’d say if she did. When they came to a stop outside the door to her apartment, Simone turned to give him a smile.

“I had a great time tonight.”

“Me, too.”

She caught her bottom lip between her perfect white teeth and chewed on it thoughtfully as if unsure what she wanted to say next. It was probably an unconscious gesture, something she did whenever she was thinking, but to him, it was sexy as hell and all he could think about was kissing her.

Surely, one kiss couldn’t hurt. He desperately wanted to. He hadn’t kissed a woman in so long. It would be nice to see if he still remembered how.

Before he could stop himself, Drake tilted Simone’s face up to his and pressed his mouth to hers.

She tasted just as sweet and delicious as he thought she would. Her lips were soft and pliant under his as she kissed him back, her tongue eagerly seeking his out.

Drake groaned and slid his hand into her hair, deepening the kiss. Simone sighed into his mouth, running her hands up the front of his shirt to grasp his shoulders. The feel of her touch was like a tonic to his deprived soul and he let out another groan, deeper this time.

He ran his free hand up her side and around to her breast, cupping it through the soft material of her dress. He couldn’t stop himself and apparently, Simone didn’t want him to. She moaned and arched against him. He could feel the heat of her pussy through their clothes as she pressed up against his hard cock. Damn, she felt good.

Drake drew her bottom lip into his mouth and gently suckled on it before slowly kissing his way along the delicate curve of her jaw. Simone clutched his shoulders and tilted her head back. He eagerly trailed a path of hot kisses down her neck, then back up, his mouth finding hers again. Simone looped her arms around his neck, pulling him in even closer as their tongues met.

Down the hall, a door slammed, reminding him where they were.

Drake dragged his mouth away from hers, his breathing ragged as he tried to regain control. He had to get it together because he was about five seconds away from doing something really stupid. Like taking her to bed. “I should go.”

Her lips curved into a sexy, flirtatious smile. “Or you could stay.”

God, how he wanted to. But as much as he’d love to spend the rest of the night exploring every inch of her body, he couldn’t take the chance he might go zombie on her right in the middle of sex. Talk about coitus interruptus. And it had already been almost four days since he last turned, which meant he was already pushing his luck.

“You don’t know how much I want to,” he groaned. “But I can’t.”

Simone looked up at him with those big, blue eyes. “Why not?”

“Because I…” He hesitated, trying to come up with something that would sound believable. “I have a column due in the morning and I haven’t even started on it yet.” She knew all about deadlines, so she would understand that. Besides, he did have a column to write, it just wasn’t due until next week. “Rain check?”

She looked disappointed, but she smiled anyway. “Absolutely. How does coming over for dinner tomorrow night sound?”

It would be crazy to agree when he could be so close to having an episode, but he couldn’t say no. Not when she asked in that soft, sultry voice. “Sounds great.”

“Good. Be here at seven.”

“Seven it is.”

She pulled him down for another long, slow kiss on the mouth. “Don’t be late.”

His mouth twitched. “I won’t.” He bent his head to kiss her again, then groaned. “If I don’t go now, I’ll be here all night.”

Simone laughed. “Would that be such a bad thing?”

“Not to me, but my editor at Money Issues might not be too understanding when he doesn’t find my column sitting in his inbox tomorrow.”

She sighed. “Deadlines can be a real pain in the butt sometimes. Okay, go home and write your column. I’ll cuddle up with a bowl of ice cream instead.”

He chuckled. “Sounds better than taking a cold shower, which is what I’m going to be doing when I get home.” He closed his mouth over hers once more. “See you tomorrow night, beautiful.”

Resisting the urge to pull her into his arms again, Drake turned and walked down the hallway toward the stairwell. At the top of the steps, he glanced over his shoulder to see Simone standing where he’d left her, a sexy curve to her lips.

It took every ounce of strength he possessed not to go back and pin her against the door for one more long, lingering kiss. God, what he wouldn’t give to spend the night with her. Man, it was going to take more than a cold shower to get her out of his head.

Mad Addiction

Stud and I have a new addiction. Mad Men. Yes, we're late to the party - about 6 years late! Thanks to Netflix, we're finally catching up to the rest of the world. We just watched the end of season 2.

This would be a good place to insert that if anyone posts a comment giving anything away, I will have to hunt you down and kill you. Thank you.

What is it about this show that we love? I honestly can't say. The 60's references are a hoot. More for Stud than for me, 'cuz yannow I'm soooooooo much younger than he. Okay, okay, we can safely take a few o's off. What-ever! Love the clothes, hairstyles, the props, etc., but Holy Moly the smoking (And the drinking comes in a close second)! I do wonder about the actors themselves and their health. I looked it up and read that the cigarettes aren't real, but what they are inhaling isn't all that safe, either. Gotta wonder about their future.

The male characters in the show are all pigs - every last one of them. The only one even slightly redeemable is the head of TV guy, and I fully expect him to lower his already compromised standards. The writing and acting behind all of this male piggery is nothing short of brilliant. I don't like them as people and would want nothing to do with any of them in real life, but I can't wait to see what they'll do next.

Again, inserting that if anyone posts a comment giving anything away, I will have to hunt you down and kill you. Thank you.

The women are another story. For them, marriage was the ultimate goal, and sadly, the killer of their individuality. A wife was there to do her duty for her man and family, and do it perfectly. Well, guess what? Nobody is perfect, and trying to be so will only cause failure. Oh, and it's boring. Joan and Peggy have potential, but we're only in season 3, so I don't know how their stories will develop on the career/marriage/love front. I can't wait to find out.

Yada, yada, yada...hunt you down...you know the drill.

Personally, I'm glad I wasn't of that generation. While my main job is a wife and mother, it's a far cry from what that used to mean - television extremes and all. Besides, I'd be screwed; I don't drink or smoke, and cleaning isn't high on my list, either. I do wear an apron sometimes, but only because I'm a klutz.

Time to watch another couple of episodes.

Guest interview with marvelous Mia Marlowe!

Mia and I will be chatting about her June release One Night with a Rake. I have had the pleasure of reading lots (perhaps a dozen) of her books and this is one of my favorites.

Ashlyn: What is your favorite scene from One Night with a Rake? Why?

Mia: The waltz scene. My heroine Georgette is something of a klutz and prior to an important ball at which she expects to receive a proposal from His Highness the Duke of Cambridge, her dance master has been putting her through her paces so rigorously, she’s convinced she can do nothing right. My hero Nate shows her how to waltz and restores her confidence in herself. The scene ends with Nate pressing her against the wall and kissing her thoroughly.

Ashlyn: I remember that one! Yes, I loved it too. So…How has the way you read romance novels changed since you became a writer?

Mia: I’m constantly “going to school” on the work of other authors. I study how they handle POV shifts, pacing, plot points, etc. That’s why when I find an author who really sucks me into her story, who makes me forget I’m a writer too, I treasure her. She is writing for me.

Ashlyn: I know what you mean. What has been your most embarrassing or memorable moment since becoming a published author?

Mia: That would have to be a moment at the RT Convention back in 2007. I’d been waiting for the UP elevator for what seemed like ages. Finally, I decided I’d get in the next elevator, no matter whether it was going up or down. The door opened and revealed that it was filled with Ellora’s Cave Men. I crowded in and announced, “I’m going down with you guys.” The door whirred closed and silence reigned for about ten heartbeats. Then I said, “That did not come out right.” Being gentlemen at heart, the guys all laughed and agreed that it sounded just fine to them.

Now I tend to wait for the right elevator, however long it takes.

Ashlyn: LOL. Many of us Naughty Author Chicks know the cavemen well. You couldn’t have done it with a better group of guys—wait. That didn’t come out right either! Moving on…What is the most extreme thing you’ve ever done in the name of research?

Mia: For Silk Dreams (coming August 2013) which is set in a harem, I took belly dancing lessons with one of my sisters. It was excellent exercise and really got me into the mind set of my epileptic heroine who’d been sold into slavery because her family believed she was “witched.” If you’d like to be notified when it comes out, I hope you’ll pop over to my website http://www.miaamarlowe.com and sign up for my newsletter.

I just got back from a 12 day cruise around the British Isles, which was partly to celebrate my being cancer free for 4 years and our wedding anniversary, and partly for me to do some hand’s on research for upcoming titles. I’m pleased to confirm that I’ve accepted contracts for more novels for both Sourcebooks and Kensington.

Ashlyn: YAY!!! I’m so happy to hear that. One more question…Do you have a book of the heart you haven’t yet written that you’re dying to write? Can you tell us about it, and why you’re drawn to the idea so much?

Mia: I love historical romance, but sometimes, I like to play with cross-genres. I have an idea for a paranormal Regency that’s sort of a “Leverage” type group meets Jane Austen in King George III’s Court. The series is called The Order of the Muse. His Grace, the Duke of Camden, has recruited (some say ‘coerced’) gifted individuals from all strata of society to join his Metaphysical Union of Sensual Extraordinaires. Their purpose is to protect the Crown from arcane weapons of a psychic bent. The duke fears that one such malicious object may have slipped by them and is responsible for King George III’s periodic descents into lunacy. There may be no help for His Majesty, but Camden intends to see that a similar fate doesn’t overcome “Prinny,” the Prince of Wales. If you’d like a taste of the story, I’ve posted the first 6 chapters on my website! http://miamarlowe.com/blog/mias-online-novel/

Publishers Weekly’s review of One Night with a Rake

“Mason and Marlowe’s fast-paced second Royal Rakes romance (after Waking Up with a Rake) features a progressive heiress and a jaded nobleman. In Regency England, the Duke of Cambridge want to marry quickly, hoping to father the next heir to the throne. His enemies blackmail Lord Nathaniel Colton into agreeing to deflower Cambridge’s potential bride, Lady Georgette—the daughter of the Marquis of Yorkingham and sister of Nate’s deceased fiancĂ©e. Georgette often travels to the seediest parts of London to help prostitutes leave their sordid lifestyles, so Nate offers to be her protector; proximity results in romantic trysts that lead her down the path of ruin and him closer to realizing that he has true feelings for her. Mystery simmers alongside the romance as Nate and Georgette seek a killer while contemplating a future together. Passionate interludes and scintillating twists and turns will entice historical fans.”

Vine

I love Twitter.

Everyday I check out the tweets and look to see who's doing something fun, interesting or informative. I've also made Twitter friends with pundits, photographers, and poets. I enjoy the artistic endeavors of these followers and I try to contribute something creative on my end.

What does this have to do with writing?

The secret is in that second paragraph.

Creative.

Writing short poetry or coming up with something interesting to say stirs the juices of my mind and makes me think. And that helps my writing. Gives me new perspective on things, whether it's a quote or a photo of a cupcake.

Yes, I said cupcake.

I've also discovered the world of cupcakery.

Wonderful websites and blogs with glorious cupcakes that will make your mouth water and your mind go crazy with new, fun ways for your hero and heroine to enjoy these creamy delights.

Licking comes to mind...but I digress.

Recently, a new app from Twitter appeared on the yellow brick road of social media called Vine. Sex-second videos, I mean six-second videos (yes, I really did make that typo as I was writing this!) that can be as creative as you are.

What a fun, new way to tell our stories...but in six seconds?

I decided to give it a try with Naked Sushi about spy wanabe PEPPER O’MALLEY who gets more than she bargained for when she discovers her sleazy boss is hiding corporate secrets.
She gets fired.
Was it her fault she got caught in the copy room with her pants down with a hunky thief?
The only way Pepper can get her job back is to become a naked sushi model and spy on her ex-boss.
She’s thrown into a world of corporate espionage she never imagined…

I decided on a written-words-on-the page promo for Naked Sushi.

Here is the first line of my Cosmo Red-Hot Read from Harlequin in stop-motion.

The first line of Naked Sushi looping from here to eternity...

The Grave Part - 2

When Gabriel Devlin's story begins in Secrets and Sins: Gabriel, two years have passed since the deaths of his wife and son. Below is the prequel to his story...where it really begins...

Leah.
His best friend. His mother had worked as housekeeper in her family’s home for years, and her father had been a father figure to him since his own had disappeared long before Gabe was born. Leah and James Bannon were as much family as the three men standing next to him.
“Gabe.”
He started, tore his gaze away from Leah and met blue eyes as familiar to him as his face. Ana Devlin, his mother, squeezed his hand, grief heavy on her face.
“It’s over, Gabe,” she whispered. “Are you ready to go?”
Panicked, he jerked his head back to the casket. Already employees of the funeral home were removing the flowers, and people headed across the cemetery to their waiting cars. No, his mind screamed. Terror and agony shredded him, and he wondered why his blood didn’t seep into the withered grass at his feet. Nothing should hurt this bad and not bleed.
He must have released a bit of that animal-like howl because Chay shifted closer and grasped his shoulder in a hard grip, as if bracing him. Or prevent him from leaping in the earth with Maura and Ian.
“You go ahead, Aunt Ana,” Malachim murmured. “We’ll stay with Gabe and bring him with us.”
“If you’re sure,” his mother stammered. “I can wait, too.”
“No,” Rafe assured her, his voice low, soothing. “We have him.”
Gabriel couldn’t rip his eyes from the white, large box that a crane slowly lowered into the ground with an eerie creak reminiscent of a raven’s caw.
He couldn’t leave, couldn’t force his feet to move from this place where his wife and son would find eternal rest. God help him, he couldn’t leave them behind.

What is Irony?

What is irony? I thought I knew. In fact, I started writing this blog thinking I knew, but the more I looked for examples, the more I realized that it’s not what I thought. Er, is that irony? Some sites say yes, some  say no.

Apparently, this is quite a debate. It has become one of those words that is so misunderstood that those misunderstood definitions have become widely acceptable. But are they right? (Hmm, kind of like starting a sentence with “But” or “And.” Wait, is that the period inside, or outside of the quotations? Which side of the Pond did the dictionary come from? I mean, From which side of the Pond—Aaarrrghhhh!)

Sorry, back to the subject at hand. Alanis Morrisette’s song, Ironic, is named on many sites as the wrong meaning of irony. I’ll use one of her lines as an example:

It’s a black fly in your chardonnay
This is not, in itself, irony. Would it be if, say, you wanted a glass of chardonnay at home, dug it out of the back of the fridge, only to find a black fly in the bottle. In the trash it goes, and you’re moved to clean the rest of the fridge because...ew! Unfortunately, that was your last bottle of chardonnay, and by now you not only want it, you need it. At this point, you decide you deserve to get the hell out of the house, and you treat yourself to a nice glass of chardonnay at a local bar. You’re about to take your first sip, when a black fly decides to commit Kamikaze - in your chardonnay.

Is this irony now? Or simply Murphy’s Law with an evil sense of humor? I would call it irony because the opposite of what was expected to happen, happened. It’s a situational irony. Here’s one website that gives the rules, which says this scenario would be irony, but then it goes on to give examples where scenarios like this wouldn’t be irony. Heh?

http://www.dailywritingtips.com/what-is-irony-with-examples/

Imagine my surprise to also discover an entire website dedicated to the cause, where definitions and examples are posted and put to a vote.

http://www.isitironic.com/

I dare you to take a look at both sites and see what you think. Did irony mean what you thought it meant? Did you walk away with a better understanding, or even more confusion?

Inquiring minds want to know.
Isn’t it ironic?
Don’t you think?
By the way, it did rain on my wedding day. Made my hair curl perfectly.

Can’t Fake This’ Instant Attraction

By: Casey Crow

You know that show Millionaire Matchmaker on Bravo, right? Of course you do. Patti Stanger rocks with her take no crap from anybody self. I love it when she says "the pecker does the picking." Well, that got me thinking about a scene in my debut released Dec. 6th! In CAN'T FAKE THIS, Anna's ***that other P word** does the picking. The attraction she feels for Chase is instaneous. Here's a snippet to illustrate what I'm talking about:

Excerpt:

As I rummaged through my clutch for a dose of lip gloss, Marisol cleared her throat and cut her gaze across the room. I followed her line of vision and… Holy shit. I do believe my freakin’ heart stopped. He wasn’t supermodel gorgeous, not with his shaved head and height a tad on the short side, but his swagger… His near-predatory confidence as he maneuvered through the room made my eyes zero in on him. He locked on me, and I felt a slow, lazy smile spread across my lips. Suddenly we were the only two people in the room. My blood pressure hitched a degree with every step he took, and that feeling a girl gets when her heart beats so fast she’s on the verge of throwing up? Yep, I had it. I believe the technical term is “lust at first sight.”

A second later, his warm hand brushed my shoulder, and I’m not kidding, I thought I might melt right off that stool. Even the fine hairs on my arms stood on end, completely attuned to him and begging for attention. Needless to say, my nipples gave him a proud salute.

“Hi, I’m Chase Harris.” His heated breath tickled my ear as he leaned in to be heard over the country rock band jamming out twenty feet away.

My lungs folded and decided breathing was no longer necessary. The brief contact ignited a fiery liquid in the bottom of my tummy. My pussy simmered for the first time in years without the aid of batteries. “Anna Ryan,” I answered. “It’s nice to meet you.” Was it ever. I extended my hand, which he ignored for a hug.

My nostrils filled with the citrus scent of cologne, but underneath I detected something more masculine, more primal. I longed to bury my face in his soft gray fitted T-shirt. The garment outlined every perfect bulge. I couldn’t make out its graffiti design, but it very well could’ve said Eat Me and I would’ve happily obliged.

His gaze roamed my body, and the sexy glint in his eyes told me the risk of catching a cold in this black strapless mini was totally worth it. I might be in dire need of a boob job, but Chase didn’t seem to mind my negative As. Then the space between us grew cold as he left my side to hug Marisol.

“Cuba! Hey, woman. Great to see you.”

“Hey, yourself.” She flashed me a shrewd grin.

I so owed that girl.

I'd love to hear about moments you've had where the attraction blows you away!

A divorcee ready to reenter the dating world, Anna Ryan is determined to be the best “product on the market,” which requires a lot more experience so she propositions sexy police officer Chase Harris to teach her how to make hot, passionate love as opposed to just having sex. He takes it a step further, instructing each lesson based on The Twelve Days of Christmas.

The Pepper O'Malley Chronicles Part 5: How safe is your hotel room?

What does a spy do?

Pepper O'Malley, the heroine in "Naked Sushi," my October 2013 Cosmo Red-Hot Read from Harlequin, finds out when she's up to her eyeballs in corporate espionage in a hotel...all I can tell you is that it's sexy and fun.

A lot of spying goes on in hotels, which made me wonder, with the RWA Conference in Atlanta coming up in two weeks, how safe is your room?

Here are my “Hotel Security Spy Tips” to help you secure your hotel room on your next trip:

1.)  Forget getting a room on the ground floor no matter how close it is to the hotel Starbucks. Being on the ground level (or “earth” floor in European hotels) makes it easier for someone to enter your room through a door or window.

2.)  Drooling over the hunky guy in the next room from your balcony? Imagining him jumping over his balcony into yours and sweeping you into his arms? This fantasy could be your undoing if the wrong person does the jumping. Never share a balcony with another room or book a room with a balcony that can be easily accessed from the one next door.

3.)  Never give out your room number no matter how good-looking that guy is you met in the bar. Meet him in a public  place. Obvious, I know, but it bears repeating.

4.)  Don’t forget “sound masking” if you suspect someone may be eavesdropping or you think your room is bugged. Turn on the TV or radio or run the shower. Also, if the TV is facing your bed (which most do), be aware you could be starring on your own TV reality show: there could be a concealed hidden microphone or an embedded pinhole video cam in the TV. If you suspect this might be a “hidden extra” in your hotel room, unplug the TV.

5.)  Cover the peephole. Voyeurs as well as spies can see you in the buff when you don’t know it by using an optical viewer that reverses the image. If you don’t have a piece of tape, dark-colored eyelash glue will block their view. It dries quickly and peels off easily.

You never know what extras your room may include. Find out what I found in my bathroom at the Hotel Saturnia in Venice, Italy.

The Grave- Part 1

When Gabriel Devlin's story begins in Secrets and Sins: Gabriel, two years have passed since the deaths of his wife and son. Below is the prequel to his story...where it really begins...

The grave gaped wide like a dark maw in the earth, eager to swallow up the casket that perched above it. Bouquets of colorful flowers draped the closed lid, seeming incongruous with the priest’s solemn prayer and the overcast, grey sky, heavy with the promise of snow.
Gabriel Devlin stared at the white casket, large enough for the wife and son that rested within its depths. Grief squeezed his heart in its icy grip. He shivered and wondered if he would ever be warm again. His gaze returned to the scarred earth and received his answer.
No, he would never know the warmth of love again.
His breath hitched and his throat burned with the tears he refused to shed. Though his mother flanked one side of him and his best friends, Malachim Jerrod, Raphael Marcel, and Chayot Grey positioned themselves on the other like tall, silent sentinels, he was alone, separated from everyone and everything else but his grief.
The priest’s monotone offered up a prayer, commending Maura and Ian’s spirits into God’s keeping. Rage clawed at his chest. God had entrusted them into Gabriel’s hands, why had He chosen to take them from him? Had he done such a horrible job?
He squeezed his eyes shut, guilt flaying the skin from his soul. When he reopened them, he stared off into the distance, needing to look at anything but the casket that contained his family’s remains.
As his gaze skimmed the crowds, only a few met his eyes, most skittering away as if unable to stare into the face of sorrow. Hell, he knew what he looked like. A gaunt, empty-eyed caricature of the man he’d been.
His gaze settled on a tall, slim figure. As he stared the woman lifted her dark head and eyes as green as the leaves on top of the casket met his. Unlike the others, she didn’t avoid his stare, but held it. Sympathy, sorrow, and love glistened, along with her tears.
Leah.
