Mia and I will be chatting about her June release One Night with a Rake. I have had the pleasure of reading lots (perhaps a dozen) of her books and this is one of my favorites.
Ashlyn: What is your
favorite scene from One Night with a Rake? Why?
Mia: The waltz scene. My heroine
Georgette is something of a klutz and prior to an important ball at which she
expects to receive a proposal from His Highness the Duke of Cambridge, her
dance master has been putting her through her paces so rigorously, she’s convinced
she can do nothing right. My hero Nate shows her how to waltz and restores her
confidence in herself. The scene ends with Nate pressing her against the wall
and kissing her thoroughly.
Ashlyn: I remember that
one! Yes, I loved it too. So…How has the way you read romance novels changed
since you became a writer?
Mia: I’m constantly “going to
school” on the work of other authors. I study how they handle POV shifts,
pacing, plot points, etc. That’s why when I find an author who really sucks me
into her story, who makes me forget I’m a writer too, I treasure her. She is
writing for me.
Ashlyn: I know what you
mean. What has been your most embarrassing or memorable moment since becoming a
published author?
Mia: That would have to be a moment
at the RT Convention back in 2007. I’d been waiting for the UP elevator for
what seemed like ages. Finally, I decided I’d get in the next elevator, no
matter whether it was going up or down. The door opened and revealed that it
was filled with Ellora’s Cave Men. I crowded in and announced, “I’m going down
with you guys.” The door whirred closed and silence reigned for about ten
heartbeats. Then I said, “That did not
come out right.” Being gentlemen at heart, the guys all laughed and agreed that
it sounded just fine to them.
Now
I tend to wait for the right elevator, however long it takes.
Ashlyn: LOL. Many of us
Naughty Author Chicks know the cavemen well. You couldn’t have done it with a
better group of guys—wait. That didn’t come out right either! Moving on…What is
the most extreme thing you’ve ever done in the name of research?
Mia: For Silk Dreams (coming
August 2013) which is set in a harem, I took belly dancing lessons with one of
my sisters. It was excellent exercise and really got me into the mind set of my
epileptic heroine who’d been sold into slavery because her family believed she
was “witched.” If you’d like to be notified when it comes out, I hope you’ll
pop over to my website http://www.miaamarlowe.com and sign up for
my newsletter.
I
just got back from a 12 day cruise around the British Isles, which was partly
to celebrate my being cancer free for 4 years and our wedding anniversary, and
partly for me to do some hand’s on research for upcoming titles. I’m pleased to
confirm that I’ve accepted contracts for more novels for both Sourcebooks and
Kensington.
Ashlyn: YAY!!! I’m so happy to hear
that. One more question…Do you have a book of the heart you haven’t yet written
that you’re dying to write? Can you tell us about it, and why you’re drawn to
the idea so much?
Mia: I love historical romance, but
sometimes, I like to play with cross-genres. I have an idea for a paranormal
Regency that’s sort of a “Leverage” type group meets
Jane Austen in King George III’s Court. The series is called The
Order of the Muse. His Grace, the Duke of Camden, has recruited (some
say ‘coerced’) gifted individuals from all strata of society to join his Metaphysical Union of Sensual
Extraordinaires. Their purpose is to protect the Crown from arcane weapons
of a psychic bent. The duke fears that one such malicious object may have
slipped by them and is responsible for King George III’s periodic descents into
lunacy. There may be no help for His Majesty, but Camden intends to see that a
similar fate doesn’t overcome “Prinny,” the Prince of Wales. If you’d like a
taste of the story, I’ve posted the first 6 chapters on my website! http://miamarlowe.com/blog/mias-online-novel/
“Mason and
Marlowe’s fast-paced second Royal Rakes romance (after Waking Up with a Rake)
features a progressive heiress and a jaded nobleman. In Regency England, the
Duke of Cambridge want to marry quickly, hoping to father the next heir to the
throne. His enemies blackmail Lord Nathaniel Colton into agreeing to deflower
Cambridge’s potential bride, Lady Georgette—the daughter of the Marquis of
Yorkingham and sister of Nate’s deceased fiancée. Georgette often travels to
the seediest parts of London to help prostitutes leave their sordid lifestyles,
so Nate offers to be her protector; proximity results in romantic trysts that
lead her down the path of ruin and him closer to realizing that he has true
feelings for her. Mystery simmers alongside the romance as Nate and Georgette
seek a killer while contemplating a future together. Passionate interludes
and scintillating twists and turns will entice historical fans.”

Mia here again. Let’s get the discussion going. I shared my
most embarrassing moment. How about you? Is there an episode in your past you’d
like to re-script a bit? I’m in Atlanta for the RWA convention right now, but
I’ll be checking in to respond!

I have One Night with a Rake, can't wait to read it soon!
And, I LOVE the sound of The Order of the Muse series!!!
“I’m going down with you guys.”
LOL!! That is hilarious! What a classic story! *wiping tears away*
Mia, I've just added One Night with a Rake to my TBR pile. I love historicals, and the scene you described reminded me of "Dirty Dancing" so much I almost swooned while reading it. Hee-hee! Gotta read it!
Thank you so much for stopping by NAC!! We're so glad to have you here!
Naima
Shoot! I responded too quickly! Okay, one moment I'd like to re-script isn't conference or writing related. The top one that comes to my mind is still crawl-under-a-rock embarrassing though. Or should it be crawl-under-a-pew?
At church one Sunday, a lady in front of me started shouting, and since the ushers were preoccupied, I picked up a fan and went to work. That day I'd worn a strapless dress with a jacket over it. Well I'm fanning and fanning, and the next thing I know the strapless dress became a high-waisted skirt! Thank GOD I'd worn a strapless bra underneath, but still! My girls had decided to join in praise and worship, too! LOL!! Yeah, no more strapless dresses for me at church! I jerked the dress up and prayed no one saw it. I was in the right place, I guess...y'know for prayer 'n all... Snicker.
Naima
I love historical romance. I can't wait to read this one. Something else to add to my TBR list !
Laurie, I'm so glad you already have One Night with a Rake and hope you love it.
Thanks, Naima. I'm always happy to find some other naughty author chicks!
Yikes, Naima! That's an embarrassing church story. Mine involves a swallow that accidentally got into the church and was swooping through the sanctuary. Unfortunately on one of the passes, it "blessed" me on the head.
Monica, my TBR pile looks like the Tower of Babel. I blame Naima for putting me in a 'church reference' frame of mind! ;-)
LOL. Tour of Babel, indeed!
My most embarrassing moment was being taken to task by my favorite author in a very public, yet subtle way...right in front of everyone at the NEC conference, and yet no one would have realized it--but me.
She spoke of how she had her own fan-girl moment and kept touching her idolized author. Um...yeah. I was fawning all over her the night before. Oops. Live and learn.
