The Day I Knew I Loved my Husband

Or maybe this blog post should be titled the day I knew he loved me. A couple years ago I had this sudden epiphany of how much the man must love me to put up with some of my er…quirks. Don’t get me wrong, I knew I loved my husband when I married him, but when we got married we’d known each other about 8 months (he proposed on the third date and it was a fast engagement). Over the last six or so years we’ve been through a lot of separations (work, etc.) and through it all we’ve grown stronger every day. We have our ups and downs like all couples of course, but the way my husband treats me is sort of the mold for how my hero’s treat their women. Which brings me to the point of my story.

A couple years ago I’d been reading up on these design books and found this funky, unique green color that I fell in love with. I decided I wanted our room painted that color. No, not as an accent color, but the whole frickin’ room. Looking back I have no idea what I was thinking cuz Lord, that green was bright. While I was at work my husband primed and painted the whole thing and when I got home he was so excited to show me what he’d done. As soon as I saw the room I burst into tears. I’m not a crier but the color was truly hideous and all I could think about was that we were going to be surrounded by puke green colors in our haven. My husband told me he’d take care of it then without a word, left, got some new neutral paint, then repainted the entire room the next day. It wasn’t a crazy grand gesture like sky writing a proposal but it meant a lot to me. In the long run, it’s the little things that add up and make someone heroic and that’s what I like to see in the heroes I read and write about. What about y’all? Has someone ever done something that meant a lot to you that you’d like to share?

P.S. All wasn’t lost. I ended up using that green paint on a wooden bakers rack and it was the perfect color for the accent piece.

Awwww. Your hubby sounds like a real keeper. Ryan and I had a fast engagement too. We met in May, her proposed in October and we were married in January. Phew!

How sweet! I had an epiphany moment like that. DH and I had been dating a few months and when we got back to my apartment one night, the door was ajar. After going in ahead and checking it out, he let me in. My cat was missing. The man was allergic and didn't even like that cat. He searched for hours, even diving into several dumpsters in the complex. Although we hadn't yet said the words, I knew it was love. Never found the cat, but I bagged the man.

Ooh, handyman! Sweet and sexy.

I won't rehash the story I shared on here before about my husband stomping on a fatally wounded sparrow since it always makes me weepy and you've heard it before. But he does stuff nearly every day that makes me feel that way… I think what I'm most grateful for in the last year has been his support and encouragement of me pursuing writing full-time since I got laid off in March 2009. Granted we thought we'd have moved away by now and I'd be back in a design job, but he's been wonderfully patient about carrying us financially since I took a gigantic earnings hit. Though saintly or not, he was probably more excited than I was when my first royalty check showed up.

Yay for fast engagements, Lisa!

Wynter, yeah, your hubby is definitely a keeper :)

*Sniffle* The sparrow story makes me sad too, Cara! Supporting your writing gives him a loooot of brownie points ;)

Savannah, I'm seriously dying to hear all the details of your um...courtship. Three fricking dates??? I must know the specifics, because it boggles my mind :)

He sounds so sweet, and you know what a sucker I am for military guys, so I kind of love him already!

My hubby has done lots of sweet things too, but I think two of the best happened before we were even dating. One was when my mom got hit by a train (yeah, really). My ex came up to the hospital with me (I drove, and he should've wrestled the keys from me because I was in no shape to be behind the wheel), but as soon as he found out my mom was going to be okay, he left because he had engineering homework to do. Seriously.

Then my future hubby showed up. He'd heard what had happened, and sat with me in the waiting room, holding my hand until two in the morning until I got to see her and reassure myself she was going to be okay. Since my ex had taken my car home (I sometimes wish I could go back in time and slap him), DH drove me back to my place and topped it all off with the best hug I've ever received.

Then a couple months later when my appendix ruptured (this sounds like a soap opera, doesn't it? Lol.), my ex was once again more concerned about his engineering degree than me, and came out to see me once the entire week I was in the hospital. But DH snuck up to visit me one night. We weren't supposed to have any contact, at the request of our exes, but he came up anyway and visited. When he left he leaned over the bed, smoothed my hair back and kissed my forehead. After that, my heart ached worse than my incisions.

Wow, now I need to hear YOUR story about how you two finally got together!! It sounds much more interesting than mine ;) One day you and I are going to share that bottle of wine and dish the details!

LOL! That is so sweet, Savannah! Yes, that man loves you! I have to admit-okay, brag--that my husband is as sweet as yours. One of the most considerate and thoughtful things he's done for me was put my perm in my hair when I was too tired to do it. Now I don't know what it says about me that I allowed him near my head with a perm kit but there you have it...and I still have hair! The man can put in a mean perm! Oh...and he spent an evening watching "The Last Unicorn" with me. *sigh* What a man!

That's so sweet Naima! Mine actually straight irons my hair b/c I'm too lazy to do the back (my hair is long). He's made me swear to never tell his friends but I'm pretty sure they don't read this blog so he's safe, lol. I think you might win in terms of cuteness as far as The Last Unicorn goes!

That was so incredibly sweet. All of your stories are enough to make you just adore men as a gender. Mine is always so proud of my writing, he asks every time I have a new cover for the best quality jpeg so he can have it printed and framed. And he threw me that surprise party for my accomplishments last winter. I'm convinced men are more romantic than women.

Great timing for me with this post, Savannah. DH and I have an anniversary this Mon.(yes, we were married on Memorial Day weekend). I can hardly believe it, but it's been 18 years.
Lots of ups and downs in that amount of time, but there are a few that stand out. I knew I was going to marry him when I was being a total be-yotch and he bit back at me and I cried. He immediately apologized to me, and when I asked him why (remember, I was being the be-yotch in the 1st place), he said it didn't matter - he'd made me cry.
You marry a man like that - so I did!
