Romance Covers

I just got my cover for Unleashed Temptation and I must say, I'm very happy with it. My heroine isn't a blonde (she's a redhead) but the artist captured everything else I asked for. I feel pretty lucky because that's usually not the case when putting in cover requests. In a way, I believe that covers can make or break book sales. Maybe not so much in epublishing, if readers are buying from a certain house because of what specific genre they offer that other houses don't, but as a rule, I definitely think covers matter.

The first thing I notice on a book is the cover (unless your name is Linda Howard or Nora Roberts, then I notice your name first). A cover automatically draws me in, and the title is a close second. If it's a catchy title like Dead Girls Are Easy (this is the title of a book by Terri Geary), then I'm almost guaranteed to pick it up. Of course, it's ultimately the back cover blurb combined with the excerpt that make me agree to the final purchase. Still, something has gotta reel me in first!

As far as covers in erotic romance, I love entangled body parts and smoking embraces, but I don't love a lot of nudity. I also have a secret addiction to Harlequin Intrigue covers. I love the dark-haired heroes carrying guns or wearing cowboy hats. If a guy on the cover is wearing a cowboy hat, that's almost guaranteed to make me pick up the book.

What about y'all? What do you like to see on romance covers?

Congrats to Naima Simone for winning last week's contest. (I love your name by the way. I feel like you should be a character in a Linda Howard novel. Love it!) Your cover is smokin' hot! I love covers that reveal and also conceal--just enough to tease. Yours certainly does the job.

Congrats on the hawt cover! I'm with Jina - give me a hint of naughty. I prefer the cover to feature a man and woman, rather than one or the other.

That's a beautiful cover!

I like it when one of the characters on the cover is making eye contact with the reader. A face really draws me in. So do beautiful colors. The cover gods smiled on my Watchkeeper and Lucid covers.

I like it when the woman has a look of ecstasy on her face and the man is oh-so-close as if he's just kissed her or they've been tearing up the sheets! Covers that are artistic (as opposed to looking as if someone just shot a digital photo of two people) also turn me on. I'm looking forward to the cover I get for "Adored" - my release for EC's Moderne line.

I like a man on the cover, with or without a woman.

That's certainly a sexy cover. Personally, I like to see a clinch cover but not a lot of flesh other than the hero's chest. And I hate it when they cut off the heads.
